Building bridges for the future of Fleurieu transport

Thu, 27 February, 2025

It’s not often you can drive over a bridge and say, “I built that,” but for the team at SGP Civil, it’s all in a day’s work.

SGP Civil is installing the key structural and concrete components of the new Aldinga interchange bridge, the centrepiece of the Aldinga Beach Road and Aldinga Road realignment in Stage 2 of the Main South Road duplication.

This vital infrastructure will provide smoother, safer journeys for locals, commuters, freight, and visitors to the Fleurieu region.

Based in Somerton Park, SGP Civil is a proud South Australian company that has grown significantly since its inception in 2016.

From a small crew, they now employ over 60 people, deliver their own projects, and achieve an annual turnover exceeding $40 million. Their impressive portfolio includes work on the Northern Connector bridges, Heysen Tunnel refit, and the Ovingham Railway Station.

Nationally, they’ve contributed to major projects like the Tindal Fuel Farm in the Northern Territory.

Senior Project Engineer Paul Agostinelli says, “We specialise in complex civil earthworks and structural concrete projects, especially bridges.”

At Aldinga, the team has constructed the formwork and poured the concrete for all key bridge elements, including barriers, and installed 972 metres of concrete friction slabs to stabilise the underpass. December saw the installation of 12 Super-T beams, each weighing 40 tonnes, lifted into place by a 700-tonne crane.

By late January, SGP Civil completed pouring over 230 cubic metres of concrete for the bridge deck, which vehicles will soon traverse.

The team is now focused on finishing barriers, kerb and footpaths ahead of asphalting.

Paul notes that this project has been an opportunity to work with a variety of contractors while contributing to an iconic piece of South Australian infrastructure.

“It’s always rewarding to be part of projects that will bring long-term benefits to the state,” he says.
