FCA Partners with KYAC to Deliver First On-Site Cultural Heritage Monitoring
The Fleurieu Connections Alliance (FCA) has proudly welcomed two Cultural Heritage Officers from the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation (KYAC) to site at Silver Sands Creek, marking the first time KYAC has delivered cultural heritage monitoring on-site for a client project.
While the Alliance has engaged cultural monitors throughout the life of the project, this is the first time KYAC has deployed officers in this capacity following a recent shift that has seen cultural heritage responsibilities brought in-house by KYAC.
“Cultural heritage has always been a priority for us, and this moment is an important step forward in deepening our connection with KYAC and the Kaurna community,” said Nick Travers, FCA Environmental Manager. “Having KYAC on site in this formal monitoring role reinforces our shared commitment to protecting and respecting Country throughout the project.”
FCA has worked closely with KYAC from the very beginning of the project, consulting on design, alignment and methodology to ensure culturally significant areas are identified, understood and managed appropriately.
For Alliance General Manager Andy Coonan, the visit from KYAC’s Heritage Officers reflects the values at the heart of the project.
“Our relationship with KYAC continues to grow and strengthen. Welcoming their Cultural Heritage Officers to site is a proud moment for all of us and highlights the respect we have for Kaurna knowledge and leadership,” Andy said. “We are committed to delivering this project in a way that acknowledges, values and protects the cultural heritage of the land we are working on.”
FCA looks forward to continuing its partnership with KYAC and ensuring Traditional Owner engagement is embedded across all elements of project delivery.
