Meet Bobby the Wombat – Exploring Kaurna Culture through a fun new Activity Book

Tue, 01 April, 2025

Fleurieu school students have the chance to dive into an exciting adventure in Kaurna culture with Bobby the wombat!

The Fleurieu Connections Alliance (FCA) is thrilled to introduce the Kaurna Activity Book, a colourful and engaging way for local kids and their families to explore the rich stories and traditions of the Kaurna people.

Packed with fun activities and meaningful lessons, this book brings to life the unique cultural heritage of the Traditional Owners of the land along Main South Road.

Featuring Bobby the Wombat, the book takes readers on a journey along Main South Road, showcasing Kaurna stories and their connection to the area. It aims to engage children and families, promoting understanding and appreciation of the Kaurna culture while fostering a deeper connection to the land.

Funded through an $810 million commitment from the Australian and South Australian governments, the duplication of Main South Road and Victor Harbor Road aims to enhance connectivity and safety across the Fleurieu Peninsula, but it also provides an opportunity to embed cultural awareness into the landscape.

The Kaurna Activity Book was developed in close collaboration with the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation (KYAC) and Aboriginal Urban Design, a Kaurna-owned business. This partnership ensures that the stories and cultural significance of the Kaurna people—the Traditional Owners of the land—are authentically represented.

‘This activity book is a direct extension of our efforts to highlight Kaurna stories and their enduring relationship with the Fleurieu Peninsula,’ said Alliance General Manager Andy Coonan. ‘We hope that families and communities alike will enjoy exploring Bobby the Wombat’s adventures and learn more about the vibrant culture of the Kaurna people.’

The Kaurna Activity Book underscores FCA’s broader commitment to meaningful engagement with Aboriginal communities and the importance of cultural representation in infrastructure projects.

By embedding these stories into the urban design and creating educational resources, FCA aims to leave a lasting legacy that respects and honours the Kaurna people and their history.

The Alliance invites schools across the Fleurieu region and local community groups to get in touch for information on how to get involved and to request copies of this exciting, educational resource.
