Setting Out Their Future: Undergrads Join the FCA Survey Team
Two students are taking their first steps into the world of civil construction, joining the Fleurieu Connections Alliance (FCA) Survey Team as undergraduate surveyors.
Matt and Antonio are working two days a week onsite as part of their studies, gaining practical experience on the Department for Infrastructure and Transport’s Main South Road Duplication between Aldinga and Sellicks Beach. From setting out drainage pipes and bridge structures to checking pavement levels, the pair are already playing a small but meaningful role in shaping the road ahead.
Surveyors are among the first on the ground and the last to leave. Their work ensures accuracy, safety and quality across every phase of construction.
FCA Survey Manager Sebastian Lagana said the experience is giving the students the kind of real-world learning that can’t be replicated in the classroom.
“Survey is absolutely fundamental to what we do, we’re involved at every stage,” Sebastian said.
“Matt and Antonio have slotted in really well. They’re learning quickly, asking the right questions, and contributing to the day-to-day work. It’s been great to see their confidence build in such a short time.”
The undergrads are working alongside FCA’s experienced survey crew and industry partner ESO Surveyors, who have been with the project since day one. ESO has supported the placement and training of both students and continues to play a key role in mentoring and knowledge-sharing across the team.
FCA Alliance General Manager Andy Coonan said the placements highlight the importance of early career development and the value of strong industry partnerships.
“We know there’s a huge pipeline of infrastructure work coming up across South Australia, and with that comes a responsibility to help train the next generation,” Andy said.
“Matt and Antonio are a great example of how early exposure to real projects builds practical skills, confidence and passion for the industry. And thanks to partners like ESO, they’re being supported by some of the best in the business.”
“Training and skills development are key measures of success for the Alliance. This is a great example of how we’re doing our part to support the future of construction.”
While they’re only on site two days a week, Matt and Antonio are already helping to set out the future, both for the project and for their own careers.
