Project Update - December 2024

The Australian and South Australian governments have committed a total of $810 million to the Main South Road and Victor Harbor Road duplication projects, which are being delivered by the Fleurieu Connections Alliance (FCA).

We have made significant inroads on our journey to completing Stage 2 of the Main South Road duplication. The centrepiece of this project—the new Aldinga interchange—is starting to take shape.

Since construction began in early 2024, the project has achieved significant milestones, including:

  • switching traffic onto the new northbound on/off ramps
  • shifting traffic onto the new Aldinga Beach Road alignment
  • piling for the new bridge has been completed; and
  • the first permanent asphalt has been laid.

New drainage network keeps the water flowing

An FCA engineer with one of the largest pipes on the project, which will keep waterways flowing once Main South Road is duplicated from Aldinga to Sellicks Beach

Rainy days, bring it on! With our advanced water and stormwater structures taking shape, we're ready to handle whatever the skies throw at us. Across the Aldinga to Sellicks Beach project, a whopping 5,980 linear metres of drainage is being installed. These components range from small round concrete pipes at 375mm in diameter up to 1.8 metres in diameter.

The largest pieces of drainage on the site are the box culverts, which are 2.4m high by 1.54m wide. These impressive drainage structures aren't just for show—they extend existing drainage systems, ensuring three waterways that cross Main South Road continue their natural flow, even as the upgraded road takes shape above them. Progress never looked so rainproof!

Stopping traffic for a trip to the wild west

Many Normanville locals came along for the ride for the feature film project supported by the FC Alliance.

We had the unique opportunity to stop traffic—literally—helping the talented Yankalilla Youth Theatre bring their creative vision to life in the heart of Normanville.

Partnering with the group, we facilitated a main street closure, transforming Normanville into a vibrant Wild West set for their latest feature film, Tumbleweed. The scene was alive with energy as the young cast joined forces with community actors, with many Normanville locals stepping into the spotlight as extras.

The final production will premiere locally in Normanville and later make its debut on YouTube. We’re thrilled to have played a part in supporting this inspiring project and can’t wait to see the finished film!

FCA Gears Up for the Tour Down Under in 2025!

The Tour Down Under will make its way through the Fleurieu region in early 2025. As one of the most anticipated events on the sporting calendar, the race will feature multiple stages that wind through the region’s iconic roads and towns.

We are working closely with the event organisers to ensure construction works along the Main South Road Duplication Project alignment are carefully managed to minimise disruption to the race. This collaboration includes detailed planning to avoid conflicts with race stages, maintaining clear access for cyclists and spectators, and ensuring the safety of all road users during the event.

Bridging the Future: Aldinga’s Smooth New Connections

A monster crane lifts 12 Super-T beams, each weighing 40 tonnes!

The first Super T beams have been successfully installed at the Aldinga Interchange, marking a significant milestone in the project. These massive concrete beams form the backbone of the new bridge, bringing us one step closer to enhanced connectivity and smoother traffic flow for the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The new bridge is set to open in early 2025, marking another major milestone for safer and smoother travel in the Fleurieu Peninsula! Once the bridge is in place and opened, traffic will begin using the realigned Aldinga Road and Aldinga Beach Road, creating a more direct connection for east-west travel.

To keep things running smoothly until the underpass opens in 2026, temporary traffic signals will be installed on Main South Road at the newly realigned intersection with Aldinga Road and Aldinga Beach Road.

While some delays may occur for vehicles stopping at the lights on Main South Road or turning left onto Main South Road, these carefully planned measures will optimise safety and navigation for all during this transition phase.

Work on this critical piece if infrastructure began in mid-2024, with the full interchange expected to be open in 2026.

Holiday shutdown

The Fleurieu Connections Alliance will take a short break for the holidays starting 5pm Tuesday 24 December 2024.

Minor works will kick off again on Thursday 2 January 2025, with major works getting back into full swing from Monday 6 January 2025. During the break, we’ll have a team keeping an eye on the site to make sure everything stays safe and secure.

If you need to reach us for any reason, our 24/7 hotline will be staffed throughout this period – give us a call if you need any assistance on 1300 896 826.

Works in 2025

When works recommence in 2025, they will continue to be undertaken during the day and at night, as required. We’ll provide advance notice of impactful works, including road closures and noisy works, in advance. Thank you for your ongoing patience while these works are completed.

Thank you

As we wrap up 2024, we would like to thank you for your patience, understanding, and collaboration throughout the year.

Your engagement has been instrumental as we progress with the Main South Road duplication project.

We look forward to continuing our work together in 2025 as we move closer to delivering improved infrastructure for the region.
